Nice high-step, energy, rock, "the movin' and the groovin'", all that good stuff.Then...they start moving...and you hear only drums, some bassline, one loud arse baritone player, a trumpet trying too hard to scream his/her favorite note, and bones playing in UNISON instead of chords.For the entire drill. And the marching style suffers, too.Until concert formation. All of a sudden, everyone remembers the music, and goes from corps style to high knee-lift like the intro.I always thought that MARCHING and BAND go together. I'm seeing a LOT of bands that do one or the other well, but not both at the same time. We've got to do better, IMO...I'm including my group as well.How do we address this?

but during a drill, im so busy counting and concentrating that i forget to play sometimes;
its just something i have to work on;
i agree .and my director made us run the drills soo much and practiced the music soo much tht it was second nature all u had to do was make sure u hit the line on time

[cough'cough]-->guilty as charged; when i mark time, i can play well; but during a drill, im so busy counting and concentrating that i forget to play sometimes; its just something i have to work on;

During the spring semester of my freshman year at Madison (2000-2001), when Mr. Rosebur (misspelled) was our director, we did an exercise called "10 minute drill".
Using a stopwatch, he would call up song after song for 10 minutes straight, and would walk up and down the ranks checking for knee lift, memorization of music, and stamina...
We did this as a warm up before starting a parade sequence, a halftime show, or just for chop building. The number of times we did this depended on the look, sound, and intensity according to his satisfaction.
I personally believe that its all about building hand/eye/foot coordination as well. Runnels and I are have this timing issue with a freshman bass drummer. The guy can play his azz off, but once he takes his first 3 or 4 steps, it looks like a "cross-rhythm". He's playing in 4/4, while his feet, on other hand, jump from 4/4 to a ritardando into 7/16 then he gives up and starts walking/playing his part correctly. AND I CATCH IT EVERYTIME!!! Lol... Since August, it has improved but every now and then he'll lose coordination somehow and revert back to old habits.
I always like to follow an old acronym from my AAU Basketball days: R.E.P.S.- Repition Elevates Personal Skills....
