Ten Things That Can Destroy a Band Program !!!!!!!

10. Laziness - speaks for itself.  How are you going to be the best by sitting down, not practicing   and making excuses?  Being good takes hard work and effort.

9. Arrogance- ITs ok to be confident but when you feel like you are the best and nobody can touch you, you not only fool yourself but you lose blessings in the process.

8. Mess- IF it isnt something good about your fellow band members, keep it to yourself.  So what if Person A did something nasty to person B's boyfriend or girlfriend.  Shut up.

7. Lack of Parents/Volunteers- I know a lot of us have horror stories in regards to parents BUT students when you bring your parents into the band to be active, it shows power and gives your program leverage.  Guess what? My classes went on 43 field trips last year.  Most of that was in part of the parents being behind me.  Alumni you guys need to help BUT NOT RUN SHID.....  Thats the directors job.  Just come wear your shirt and say positive things to the band.

6.  Drugs/Alcohol- Your body is a temple and when you poison it with drugs or alcohol, you cant perform to your highest potential.  And dont start that "Marijuana is an herb" bs.  Marijuana is illegal because it causes Impotency and is linked to testical and penile cancer as well as ovarian cancer.  So you bandhead weedsmokers, if you develop a tumor down there, the only treatment is removal.

5.  Trying to be in too many dam organizations- Some of you think that if you join Science Club, Deca, Football, Basketball, Step Team, Big brothers of America, Girl Scouts, Animal Science and Honor Society you will get a scholarship.  It doesnt work like that.  One person does not have time to be in everything and scholarship committees are not stupid.  If you are going to be in band, then be committed to band.  IF its Honor Society or something highl recognized then thats different.  It shouldnt interfere.

4.  Senioritis- OMG Seniors. You have not graduated yet. Do your part and leave the band strong, dont make excuses everytime we look up.  Seniors are supposed to be examples but when senioritis kicks in, it spreads like cancer.

3.  Lack of Focus/Goals- If all your band wants to do is crank on somebody you have issues.  All bands should want to someday make it to the Rose Bowl or something big like that.  You should want to win competitions you go to, not just show up.

2. Negative Direction- yeah I said it.  THeres nothing worse to a band than when the director gives up on his or her program.  Yes Im the director but Im not the one who is going to go out there and perform.  Yes I will let my band take a beatdown because I love them that much and they may need to learn from it.  BUT when a director doesnt care, you can kiss the baby.  LOL

I have seen a lot of directors pushed to that point though.

1. Accountability or lack thereof- Think of a football team.  What happens if the quarterback doesnt show up? OR the offensive line misses practice.  The game still goes on with or without you, but thats some H.A.S. for anybody to not show up to pull there weight and play their position.  You put stress on your fellow members as well as the director  You represent the community and city everytime you perform or not so yes even if you play 3rd triangle, your part is valuable and you should be there.  Otherwise dont cry when another band mashes on you or you go home empty handed at a competition.

......let the church say AMEN.....

Anyway, you should add to that list, ignorance. I mean the true definition. Just because you go to school, does not mean you know something.
