  • I actually was in Josey's band from 96-99, it wasnt rare that we challenged HBCU's we did it in 97 against SC State and again in 96 against Clark Atlanta, AAMU, and Morris Brown ..............i remember i use to be up here argue with all yall louisana folks, thats when yall thought St.Aug was the only band that ever exist. ( and use to make up story saying st.aug and su battle, I've been looking for that footage and havent seen it yet , lol.

  • A native of Demopolis, Ala., Dr. Smith received an undergraduate degree from Jackson State University and a master's degree in music education from VanderCook College of Music in Chicago. While working in Alabama, Dr. Smith was named an honorary colonel for his contributions to music education by then-Gov. George Wallace.

    Dr. Smith received his doctorate from Kennedy Western University.

    During his time as band director, Dr. Smith has helped the band gain national exposure through appearances at the Georgia Games; the Nokia Sugar Bowl; the Smoky Mountain Music Festival in Gatlinburg, Tenn.; and in Atlanta, where the Josey marching band participated in the first Atlanta Braves Salute to the Fans Parade in 1987

     

    Dr. Smith, a former Richmond County teacher of the year, has been band director at Josey High School since 1977. He is credited with leading the school's marching band, the "Sonic Boom of the South," into national prominence.
