The Drill Pad

Alot of ppl will think i'm tryna make a case with this thread...but trust me i'm not lol (this thread is NOT in any way limited to Grambling State University)What i just wanna know is why has the emphasis been put almost COMPLETELY on the stands performance in marching bands today? It used to be that halftime was gametime and that your FIELDSHOW determined your bragging rights. Now its the 5th we place our greatest interest in.i can appreciate the "SU Does it again" thread because the article gave a highlight of The Human Jukebox's field show, to show them in action as a Marching Band. Most of the showmanship a band possesses is gonna be shown on the field. More is done on the field. What generations of students at schools everywhere woke up at 4:30 am DAILY to train for was endurance and discipline, ON THE FIELD.at the end of the day we are still Marching bands. Lets collectively make an effort to reappreciate the field, our drill pad.

  • *sigh...this aint gon go over well

    lol
  • I love a good drill.

Some bands are excessive and do like, three or four drills in one show, but I still love a good drill nonetheless lol
  • Bn the way i am, nothing can substitue for a prescision drill.........im not goin to go into detail about why a drill and fieldshow are important because we have visited this in other threads, and B explained it above.....

I will say this.......simply doing a "tasteless, classless, ghetto, Section 8" gimmick does NOT equate to a good field show.
  • a thread like this was already made....2's...
  • The trend is across the board.

I love seeing two bands crank, but I'm more impressed when they do so on the field with something to look at in the drill and the dance routine. Too many bands sound like "My First Trumpet" on the field, but try to send their body through the horn in the stands.

Whatever your band's "style" is, you have to execute it with a high level of energy, and play your part. Directors have to spend some time planning the show, as opposed to just plugging in songs and drills. There has to be some kind of flow to keep the crowd's interest, whether is is with a theme or without.
  • Hell most of the bands in the SWAC always do gimmicks, most do it but some don't need to do it! Huh! If your band have to put fat people and people jump roping , hula hooping and etc. to get house so some of you should refrain from saying things, THAT'S NOTHING BUT GIMMICKS! SMH
  • uh err ok?SU?UAPB?..hulahooping...uh is that TXSU?....BUT REGARDLESS OF that...if it aint ghetto...done in a tasteful way and maybe a CERTAIN areas new dance crave[da jumprope] I say do it...if it kicks Band G... I mean B arses they cant be mad.[just a joke or is it eitha way don't be salty].. heck DMs coming out in helicopters and the band in tuxedos..and someone proposing to a girl durng a fieldshow is a GIMMICK..just being honest..and dont get ya panties in a bunch ...on a REAL note...I respect..SU,UAPB,GSU,PV, [and sometimes] JSU what they put on the field high energy and a SHOW...TXSU is sometimey too[they have some stuff up their sleeve]...everybody else in the SWAC need to step they game up..REALTALK...
  • A...^^^^...the keywords were TASTELESS CLASSLESS SECTION 8 and GHETTO....there i nothing wrong with adding a lil more ENTERTAINMENT in your shows by FEATURING certain individuals...but you can go overboard if thats all ur show has ur drill was terrible..dance routine...and YOU SOUND BAD....

B....i know you were talkin about us having ppl jump rope to a popular at the time called JUMP ROPE...and the fat doodes...dont be upset sir!!! that was done wayy in 06 you still remember that whipping we gave yall on the field then??,,,SMH!!!
  • No gimmicks aren't the problem...its not doing a decent drill but having a dance routine full of gimmicks. Uapb consistently drills a hole in the field every year but they'll throw a gimmick or two in the show but who cares because the show still had substance i.e. collegiate looking drill, excellent sound and energy

thats all i was saying......some ppl say "our field show was on point" because of a "tasteless classless......(u get the picture)" skit or such that generates the wrong kind of applause and yet fail to remember that the rest of the show was flawed.
