Notice the distinct sound, the flavor, the rock. The K was one of the most balanced sounding bands in Nola. Everybody body else was worried about cranking. Dont worry the K could crank but they chose not to. The tradition of the Cougar Marching Band is strong and still striving in some Nola bands now. I like to call the modern day O.P Walker, "the old Kennedy". Mr. Rawlings, the current band director at O.P Walker is a Kennedy alumni. Thats why I call Walker "the old Kennedy". There are Kennedy alumni's here on bandhead like Book and so forth.
ONLY THE K BABY!!!

JFK was just a regular public school with a band just as good as St Aug, From what I know, Kennedy's been many places in the country for marching band competitions & concert festivals some events winning first place trophies or scoring higher than St Aug. But i cant really speak on it because that was before my time
In my time we may not have went anywhere outside of the state, but we were still one of the most requested bands for local events sometimes they were televised so we'd have Statewide or national exposure. I can recall events where we were Issued "Untitled" sheet music only minutes before performing it on Air with Singers singers.. These are the kind of things other bands in the city would have sucked at doing because they didn't have the skill to perform like Kennedy.did
in Summer of 1999 I Went in to Kennedy knowing I was going to be part of something great, I graduated from the K in 2002 Knowing that I was part of something Great.....
at the same time, I didn't go in Blinded by how great the band appeared to be on the outside, Because I knew people who were part of the band in the mid 90's I already knew that the band was struggling. The Band was Huge and needed horns and had Ragidy suits. But I wanted to Be there
When i got there I was privileged to be part of it all...I had over 80 Crab brothers in 1999. We had a 12 man Tuba Section with 8 semi working horns on a good day.. That fall we got Brand New Suits Just in time for a Dome game against Fortier We had a 140 piece band with half the instruments needed, We had 2 Tubas with 12 players.. yet we were on the front page of the Times Picayune, that was one of multiple times we were on in the newspaper during the 99-00 school year.. and back them, being on the Front cover was a big deal..
and thats only my crab year im speaking on.. But Over all My time Marching at the K was Great
..I didn't have to march for a president, a pope, or win a trophy to know that i was in a band with a great tradition & Reputation. JFK represented what the Standard Marching Band in N.O should look and sound like.
I can go on and on about Rivalries but thats not really what mattered to me //What Mainly matters to me is the experience I got from it.. It's what made me the bandhead I am today...
