Trombone Mouthpieces..... ?

I probably should've posted this somewhere on a group page but.. I wanted as many opinions and ideas as possible.
I play the trombone and I've been playing for almost 7 years. I'm about to be a senior and I plan to go to college for Music Education and Minor in Music Performance. This is my issue: I've never had lessons. And I've been playing on the same 12c mouthpiece forever. I know I need lessons, but my parents won't listen. Plus, the money isn't there either. They think that because I've been first chair all throughout high school years that I'm simply "the best" and that I don't need lessons. Help? lol
And... I've played tenor trombone, f attachment, and bass; so I have played on a different mouthpiece, but not permanently. I own an elementary level trombone with an elementary level mouthpiece. I know I need a better trombone and a better mouthpiece. I don't plan on buying a new trombone, but I do plan on buying a new mouthpiece. What do you suggest? Lastly, I don't have big bucks... just saying.

  • A 6 1/2 AL
  • You can find a 6 1/2 AL for no more than $30 on www.wwbw.com

Where I am from, very few people took private lessons before coming to college.
  • Man a good musician can play on any mouf piece
  • i play on a 12c to because 6 1/2 mess up my lips bad but for your senior year switch to 6 1/2 because you might have to if your going to be in a college band its gonna take some time to get used to it tho
  • I like 5g's but i also play tuba so....
  • I recomend the Bach 6 1/2 AL also. I have been on trombone since 1988. 12c is good for beginners only buy that 6 1/2 is good for flexibility plus I'm sure in college they will make you switch sizes anyway. As for the lessons if you can't afford them get the Arbans method book its the trombone bible. 10 minutes of that book a day will make you a beast with tone technique range power basically anything you want from a trombone
  • 6 1/2
  • 6 1/2 are bad.....i just switched to a 4GB. deeper with same tone so you get a rounder sound.
  • 12c makes you sound so thin
