  •  Livingston's show was good but if you notice, there were about 3 people not in step and the lines were only 95% straight at times.  That is how they got a 2 instead of a Division 1.

Colmesneil wasnt too bad just marching issues.

Corrigan-Camden deserved a 4 actually a division 5 but "WE" know why they didnt get a five.

This was definately one of Central's best UIL shows ever.  This year's UIL Rubric scoring system has changed for the worst from what I seen in every Region. What the judges roasted everybody in our region on was when they marched slow. We played Rocket Man as the ballad to our Elton John show and the judges ate us up. The judges explained to me

that the thing that hurts everybody is that stepping isnt uniform regardless of style.  A step is 22 1/2 inches whether high stepping or corps and it has to be perfect.  One person not stepping correct is a difference between a 2 and a 4.. Now we have to look at politics.  If Beaumont Central was to score a division 1 or a division 2 at UIL, every band in East Texas would have a fit.  IF Central beat Livingstone, they would have had to have a police escort out of that stadium.  Its sad but if a minority band is to ever win at any UIL event, EVERYTHING and EVERYBODY MUST BE PERFECT.  I can talk more in detail later.

And every time we go to UIL, I go and bug the judges.  I ask question after question. (White directors say "Youre not supposed to talk to the judges" but I do it anyway and most of them give good advice.)  Austin was 1 point away from going to Area....

  • ^^^^^ Mr. Runnels...you stated that you were one point away from Area...as much as an accomplishment that is...that is a freaking slap in the face!!! It is basically telling you and your program, you did good but due to your style, you do not deserve Area...

But on another factor...I am glad that bands actually do try to go to UIL despite the showing. I am sure most directors that knew who ran my band when i was a student at Royal..we went three times in my 5 years of marching(8th-12th) 8th grade we got a 4, 4, 3 doing a MJ show, 11th grade doing another MJ show(after this death) and got a 4, 4, 5. and my senior year doing a show with a theme of funk and jazz and got a 3, 3, 4.

Pieces performed and I will let you all judge the tunes because i know my opinions on them

8th grade- Can you feel it(intro) Liberian Girl, Velvet Rope and Ben(HATED THIS DAMN SONG)

11th Grade- Don't Stop till you get enough, Thriller into Smooth Criminal, and.......forgot the third tune....

12th grade0 Malaguena, Get Ready, In The Stone(Intro) and Bird Land  Main reason we got 3-3-4, I, myself, missed a set in the show while the people who were supposed to follow me didnt move either....most horrifying moment even :/, but we recovered well into the next song...dont know how but we did.  But look at the difference in music, along with the music came in a change in the style of show we did. One of the judges told my BD that if we did not miss that set, we would have gotten very very good results. So it is not what we do everyday as far as style...it is how we present ourselfs to those judges.

But i will say this. Some of these judges do not like the idea of 8-5 steps. Some feel if it was a 6-5 motion, it would be a better result. but because that 8-5 requires a certain knee lift, step size and energy. It is very very hard to pull off unless you work your ass off for it. What judges stress the most is that everyone looks the same. in our style, especially at these BOTB...there is always a few people over doing the style, majority doing it correctly, and a few not doing a damn thing. but go to that slightly above average corps band who makes Area every year or so. everyone looks damn near the same. Its not the significance of our styles, its simply how we execute it.

  • As far as the four band videos above. What happened to Central was similar to what happened to my band a few years back in our 2nd MJ show. Central's music selection was great but there was still room for one more tune. More could have been done in the 2 step drills. The last minute of the march was just the band standing still. I say it deserved a 3..not a 4 because of a more sophisticated selection of music but because was not alot of different and active movement, i assume this is why the judges gave Central a 4

The other band who got a 4.................. Understandable for a 2A school but to forget the music for the show is not acceptable. There is not much balance between the brass and woodwinds. But creative movements for such a small size. I see that they were going for a very patriotic showcase which means VERY HARSH JUDGING....but main case here they forgot the music........alot.

Livingston- the movement into the diamond near the 2:50 mark...half sloppy and half neat. and to get back to the lines. doing two different things to do that(lines 1 and 3 going from left to right) were sloppy and did not fit well with the beats. But i did enjoy that 2nd march movement. some of these drills are just "transposed" if you can say from 8-5 to 6-5 intervals. Very rich sound, but i did not like how they left the field. to end your show in the endzone is disrespectful to the judges in my opinion. They did not let the judges get a good front listen on their tone and balance. Deserved their score.

  • Central did not deserve a rating of 4.. there sound was very nice  and the drill was very on point.. I agree with Chris it should have been a 2... because we all know you will never get a rating of "1" in Texas unless you have a pit or you band dose a certain style.. I think they should handle  this situation with care though. what did Ozen get??

  • Hi all. I am the "owner" of the youtube channel from which you have posted these videos.

I grew up in SE Texas and participated in Region 10 music activities and I'll give you some of my thoughts from this past marching season.

I don't think Central deserved a 4. I felt it was more of a 3. Compared to the last few years, I was pleasantly surprised at their music. It was very enjoyable aside from a few tuning issues. Their marching was fine (I don't mind show-style but I've seen some inconsistencies with the knee heights) but Central could have more drill or possibly a third song. I thought they did not meet the minimum time requirements but they barely did (minimum is 5 minutes from the start of the field show to the exit off the field). Another point is that this was a state year for 4A marching bands so it's possible that the judges were a little harder on the 4A bands. Some bands that have received 1s in the past got 2s (there were a couple of rainbows 1-2-3).

Livingston, who received straight 2s, switched over from corps to military-style in 2010. My major concern about their show was that mid-way through their drill, the band seemed a lot quieter but I don't know if that's how it was supposed to be in their march selection or not. The 2 was deserved, maybe a 1 thrown in with the judges but an overall 2.

Colmesneil is a 1A band that has not competed in the region marching contest in at least 8 years unless they attended a different region. They also recently started going back to concert/sight-reading contest. The marching was fine but musically, there were tuning issues and some squashed notes in the show. Because they are a 1A school, they can and probably use 7th-12th in their show.

Corrigan-Camden is another that just started coming back to UIL Contests after a 4-5 year hiatus. They were by far the worst band in the contest. It just seems that they fell apart near the end of their show. Plus, as another poster said, they played very recognizable songs and they didn't play them very well. Their straight 4s were spot on.

I guess it depends from year to year what judges you have for contest and whether or not it is a state-year. I think Central deserved a 3 but definitely not a 4.

    Well that's my two-cents. Thanks.

  • Ozen received straight 3s and played a full corps-style show playing the music of Theme R&B Divas: And I am Telling You, How Will I know, Ain't No Mountain High Enough.

Ozen made a 1 in the marching contest back in 2003 and 2004.

  • I know what happened now. Even though the time started when they marched on, the judges might have penalized them for not actually playing the minimum 6 minutes.

    Check the UIL rubric http://www.uiltexas.org/files/music/region-marching-descriptor.pdf

This year Austin's show was A tribute to Elton John:

    Crocodile Rock

    Rocket Man

Bennie and the Jets - this is the song that got us because of the change in feel plus it was super DIFFICULT in spots.

Last years' show was our best.  We scored a 3-3-2 and got a standing ovation from Everybody throughout the whole show..  Our style was straight DCI style.

    Title: Across the Universe

    Intro: Girl Fanfare

With a little Help from My Friends

    Let It Be

    I am the Walrus

  • Some of the members forgot which style they were marching :)

  • Thanks for posting that... After reading the criteria Central deserved a 3.

I think it may have been their music selection. The judges may or may not be familiar with the music.

  • Well I marched in a Superior rated HS band, so saying the current Central is close to a 1 is pushing it. But after reading the rubric, I would say a 3 would've been a decent score for a Central,  2 wouldve been "fair" though.

But Goldy mentioned their time. I think they shouldve done a down field block and then go into two drills and playing non-stop. And after watching again I see some members are missing steps, which is a simple tempo issue. The drummajors should conduct
