Wasting a band..... smdh.......

Guys I have to share this story with you guys because it made me literally wanna hunt this person down and kick them dead in the sphyncter (IDK how to spell it).. Im not going to say the school.

For some reason I have always had a decent relationship with this middle school: students, staff and administrators.  They have had a band director for a few years who had a hard time.  Everytime I saw the band, they had about 7 or 8 kids.  The director would always complain about how hard it was to get anything done over there because you know the issues we have to work with.

So today, I visited the school (director just walked away because it was too much) and what I found absolutely enraged me.  I saw a fully refurbished and remodeled bandroom and at least $80K worth of instruments. MANY of the instruments were dated 2006 and 2007 STILL IN BOXES AND PLASTIC.....

This made me analyze how hard I work and how cats like that get a job.  I also thought about how cheated the kids were who did not get to touch those instruments.  It absolutely made me sick knowing that this person's laziness has resulted in an entire neighborhood being a laughingstock of music.  The high school band has suffered tremendously as a result too. Actually the high school band changes directors like socks.

I know I'm venting but man, seeing that made me realize why I'm a band director.  People who know me think its hilarious what I can do to a broke tuba with some vaseline, gorilla glue and duct tape.  Myself and many of the band directors I associate with have LOVE for what we do.  After today, Im even more mentally committed to helping build EVERY PROGRAM in my city.  That is why we directors want to mentor you college students so that you can build quality programs.  This guy had everything and didnt do SHID with it.  And while Im on the subject I know of another school that is in the same boat but I will save that one.

  • wow........

this is a doggone shame Goldy.

But being that you have the drive to TEACH your kids even with limited resources COMPLETELY trumps having 80k-100k worth of new un-utilized instruments.

Keep doing what you are doing and through your hard work, you'll get those resources, along with many other rewards for you AND your kids.

  • these admins can make or break a band just as much as the teacher. It might be that this person wants to keep a job so they doing what is asked of them. if so a teacher should have the testicular fortitude to move where he is really needed...if he just lazy then thats why he/she is still there. Some of These admin types dont care about nothing but lining their pockets and for some strange reason they seem to migrate to the East....how in the hell you have 2 big arse middle school bands that feed into a school with no band.
  • Actually the school got a new principal this year.  The old principal allowed the person to remain band director for years and do nothing... The new principal got in his a$$ and he got mad and left...
    • Well bye!...I just hope he don't come this way...they still not sold on band over here yet and to hire a person like that would be a step backwards...and they prone to do that out here.
  • just smh...this guy struggled with 8 kids!!!! complaining bout getting nothing done! this guy needs to go somewhere else with that crap! Brand new instruments, brand new building...yet didnt do a damn thing for these kids. Why did he even become a band director...the point of that position is to teach something you love to do!! You want to keep this art growing, not just to get summers, holidays n weekends off....The directors i see and communicate with plus my own directors...rarely took a break. Hell even I dont take a break from this, i may be graduating soon but I didnt even feel like a student this yer with how hard it was at my school. I am now taking time out of my summer to work with my school's middle school band and our high school band so the fire does not go out!!! This guy here is a disgrace!!!! We need more directors in this area like Mr. Runnels, Mr. J, Alex(sorry, do not know your last name) G Miller, Sam Long, Mr. Harris, Mr. Tilford, MR. Thornton and II, just SMFH!
    • Alex Basha i believe is his name. You can also add Mr Wilmore and Mr Sanchez to that list, if you look at where their band was when they started, with no band @ the school to where they at now. Huuuge leaps forward. back to topic though, it's a shame to hear about that happening especially where it seems that the school actually wants a music program, if they went through all that remodeling the bandroom and getting instruments for an 8 piece band.

      • exactly, its one thing for the students to get ll high and mighty about new stuff because we just got a new bandhall and the kids here are like eh its just a bandhall, a lil eat n drink wont hurt....but kids need to have respect for everything they have because somewhere else, there is a person with less....but this director needs to have respect, discipline, and some integrity to teach these kids an art that will last with them forever...
  • I feel bad for those kids.  But you know what...this sounds like the perfect gig for KKPSI.  Brothers...calling you to stand in the gap for these kids.  At the very least, hook em up after school or something????
    • I'll take some horns also...

      I need 2 mellos, 8 trumpets, 2 sousas, 2 b-tones...

    • They can ship those instruments out east. I will be sure to put them to good use.
