Guys I have to share this story with you guys because it made me literally wanna hunt this person down and kick them dead in the sphyncter (IDK how to spell it).. Im not going to say the school.
For some reason I have always had a decent relationship with this middle school: students, staff and administrators. They have had a band director for a few years who had a hard time. Everytime I saw the band, they had about 7 or 8 kids. The director would always complain about how hard it was to get anything done over there because you know the issues we have to work with.
So today, I visited the school (director just walked away because it was too much) and what I found absolutely enraged me. I saw a fully refurbished and remodeled bandroom and at least $80K worth of instruments. MANY of the instruments were dated 2006 and 2007 STILL IN BOXES AND PLASTIC.....
This made me analyze how hard I work and how cats like that get a job. I also thought about how cheated the kids were who did not get to touch those instruments. It absolutely made me sick knowing that this person's laziness has resulted in an entire neighborhood being a laughingstock of music. The high school band has suffered tremendously as a result too. Actually the high school band changes directors like socks.
I know I'm venting but man, seeing that made me realize why I'm a band director. People who know me think its hilarious what I can do to a broke tuba with some vaseline, gorilla glue and duct tape. Myself and many of the band directors I associate with have LOVE for what we do. After today, Im even more mentally committed to helping build EVERY PROGRAM in my city. That is why we directors want to mentor you college students so that you can build quality programs. This guy had everything and didnt do SHID with it. And while Im on the subject I know of another school that is in the same boat but I will save that one.

wow........
this is a doggone shame Goldy.
But being that you have the drive to TEACH your kids even with limited resources COMPLETELY trumps having 80k-100k worth of new un-utilized instruments.
Keep doing what you are doing and through your hard work, you'll get those resources, along with many other rewards for you AND your kids.
Alex Basha i believe is his name. You can also add Mr Wilmore and Mr Sanchez to that list, if you look at where their band was when they started, with no band @ the school to where they at now. Huuuge leaps forward. back to topic though, it's a shame to hear about that happening especially where it seems that the school actually wants a music program, if they went through all that remodeling the bandroom and getting instruments for an 8 piece band.
I'll take some horns also...
I need 2 mellos, 8 trumpets, 2 sousas, 2 b-tones...
