  • LMAOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO.
  • Well, the new, young arrangers are coming up now. Slowly, but surely That's why a lot of college students that don't go to SU and go other places have such unique styles in writing.
  • whats been up Carl?

but generally though, There's a Situation where Everybody's playing music that were Influenced by the old arrangements but don't they really do Justice in comparison. otherwise, They're now playing songs that come from different arrangers or different Universities, nothing is wrong with that. Unless the arrangement is just a Rip off of a Pre Katrina arrangement. Thais a good thing though , because the argument is no longer "who played it best" but "who had the better arrangement" .. and now students actually HAVE to READ when playing .. lol

Remember how Kennedy and 35 both played Stay & Skin Im In, but They both had 2 totally different arrangements. ..Thats how it's supposed to be across the board.. Not Everybody playing the same exact arrangement.. for example: CAN U FEEL IT.. It came from SU... But SU's INTRO WAS NOT WRITTEN ON THE MUSIC.. but somehow McDonogh 35 Managed to Have SU's INTRO..

The All Star Band Didnt even play it like SU.. Rawlins Added an Extra Baritone part, and then Everybody Incorporated it.. it was cool

Now.. Witth that said.. Theres Nothing wrong with playing a Different Arrangement, or enhancing an arrangement everyones Familiar with.. BUT WHEN YOU RIP OFF AN ARRANGEMENT THATS SLAW! ..lol
  • hummm?

let me think on it for a minute before replyin'
  • ^ I was gonna mention u..lol because for example. You Arrangement of Spend some time is not in Circulation but another one is.. and it doesn't do the same justice. but the arrangement is Nice..
  • well i try to arrange based off of what my band can play and learn with relative ease...
I also try to play different arrangements of songs people play...
I write and buy different arrangements from everywhere...the way we play just got paid is a straight famu rip-off except for the ending and that alto line...
also I don't like playing the same things that everyone plays but I do succumb to kid pressure every once in a while but i refuse to play any version of Jumpstart...
the younger band directors are just getting their foot in the door and the arrangements are coming...

but you will always have the case of monkey see- monkey do...
  • that means whatever southern song is hot then it will be hot to play next year or immediately...

Book.. It was originally written for JFK. as for as who has it now....I sent a copy to Wil at Walker so I know he has the real arrangement.

I have been doing arrangements for many different bands since 1993. middle, junior high, high school, and college bands. I've always wondered what other newer arranger close to my age or younger has done the same.(many different songs for many different bands, not just one or two bands) I really didn't realize all I had done until I ran into a younger dude several years back that knew "of me". Made me fell old. We got on the subject of marching bands and he was saying how he loved a certain song Kennedy played....LOL I let him brag on it for about 10 minutes before I told him it was my tune. I remember being at a parade and hearing a certain high school band (LOL) playing one of my tunes. Don't know how they get it cause I didn't sell it to them. But hey..it sounded pretty decent so thats all that matters to me. "Good Sound". I also remember selling a tune to another high school band and they director somehow removed my name and put his name on it as the arranger. A few cats told me about it but I didn't believe it until I saw it with my own eyes. I wasn't mad. I have always been the type of person that got more joy out of folks not knowing what tunes I arranged. Just call me crazy...LOL

As I have said many times...I stopped arranging tunes because the sound quality was somehow lost in New Orleans. LLLLLLLong before Katrina hit. IMO, folks only cared about blowing loud. So many factors that affect what kids are into now-a-days. I praise anyone that still focuses on sound quality. I also remember a time when it was shameful to play a tune from the previous year. Most bands were also original in what they did and what tunes/arrangements they played. Man ol man has that changed. I also remember 35 and St Aug both play Watkins tunes back in the day.(his daughter marched for 35). Both had the same sheet but performed the tunes slightly different.

I'm not sure who the arrangers are in the city. I've been in North Dallas since 2006. I would hope they are original and not copying arrangements...(but I know it happens). I guess you can also blame the bands for playing those copied arrangements. I hope all bands can get back to being original and focus on sound quality.
