Unessesary...Stand up straight, feet together and give support to the air supply and your instrument. There is nothing nessesary about leaning back as far as you can and still have the horn pointing to the ground.
really? not always the case..... i know i do all of those things... and my tone has never suffered, or my horn pointed to the ground.... if you are playing with your feet together while in the stands... you probably aint putting out any watts....

Perfect Posture=Perfect or near perfect Tone!
What are your opinions on cranking/yanking on the horn?(leaning back )
my answer was mainly for the high school level where students need to learn how to play before they can "crank" Most college musicians i know, know how to do all that leaning back and squeezing their body together or whatever they do and still sound good and powerful. and yeah...this thread is old but hey...something for me to debate on! lol

Ok, I'm not going to lie, this thread was a set up.lol. Truth be told alot of the leaning back motion, actually is a technique called "The stomach lift", on trumpet this pushses in the abdominal cavity causing more air pressure, allowing a trumpet player to better hit high notes.I can't post 100 videos of Manyard Ferguson, and Bill Chase doing this very technique, leaning back to assist with hitting that high note! :) It's actually an old yoga exercise in origin.
We need this type of dialouge to clear up alot of things that are considered stupid or coonish within hbcu or black high school college bands, you'll find are actual techniques that so-called muscians just aren't aware of.
