It seems as though all the "good" bands in Atlanta all have the same style(famu/Meac style). I want to know what happened to the diversity that use to be in atlanta?-SWD-MLK-Stephenson-Redan-Miller GroveAll these school are really the top bands in atlanta and they all have a similar style. What happened to "GOOD" swac-like bands in atlanta?
You need to be a member of bandhead.org to add comments!
The person who has been hiring the band directors for the past 9 or 10 years went to FAMU. So when they build new schools (MLK, Millergrove, Arabia Mountain, etc.) or when band directors with other styles leave he hires from FAMU.
It doesn't really matter where the band directors come from it is really the matter of what works. I agree sometimes there is no diversity but its only in the top 5 bands you named at the begining. Im apart of Stephenson High School but if you also noticed everyone you named is not just known in georgia they are also know around the U.S. or even in different countries. To be honest Swac is fun to listen and watch but not all high school bands can pull it off. The Meac style is the main one that is more clean as far as high schools are concerned and the day atlanta or dekalb switchs up their style is the day that Dekalb will no longer be know for their music programs. Do your research Dekalb is not in the top 100 music programs in america for nothing.
I see what your saying. But back in the day there was diversity throughout the county. Im not saying the Elite 5 or Fab 5 (whatever you wanna call SWD,MLK,Stephenson,Redan and Miller Grove) arent good at there particular style. But its more to DeKalb bands other than the Fab 5. What about Lithonia,Cedar Grove, Columbia etc. Atleast they can bring something diffrent to the table than (Famu/meac).

I think the better question would be what happened to Cedar Grove and Columbia.
SWD, MLK , Stephenson, Redan and Miller Grove are what they have always been in terms of style. Redan(TnSU/JSU) is more Swac-ISH than Meac-ISH IMO anyway.
But can you explain why in other states or cities are not that diverse themselves as far as style almost half of the African American music programs are ''Swac-ish'' and thats no type of diversity at all. As far as the fab Five people put them in that category, plus ''Meac-ish'' are the ones going out of state, out there region, and out the country and no offense but some H.S. over do the Swac style some end up only being known in their area. you have to know how to really to balance the that style

so basically the "MEAC" style can get you more noticed whereas the "SWAC" style is fun but really wont get you known anywhere other than your own neighborhood. i like that response

i agree with the statement. the MEAC style simply can appeal to more people than the SWAC style could.
