  • it's just a transfer slip.. OR to a magnet program
and I don't see how that helps bands straight up..

    most kids only transfer because
    1) the magnet program helps ACADEMICALLY
    2) parents want a better neighborhood
    3) NOT BAND RELATED STUFF
  • There's a bunch of that in Houston, too. At the end of 8th grade the smarter kids are being told to go somewhere other than the school they're zoned to because of test scores and what's "supposed to be" a better education. A lot of them play/sing/dance. But the schools they end up going to don't do it like their original school did. As a result, the kids don't participate, and the school there were supposed to go to suffers.

Kids living next door to Yates, Sterling, Worthing, and Jones being told to go to Lamar, Bellaire, and Furr, or the schools for Health Professions and Law Enforcment/Criminal Justice that have NO extracurriculars. North Forest is a whole different school district, and people are telling these kids (that are in band at Elmore and Forest Brook MS) to go to the magnet program at Barbara Jordan in HISD. How is that really helping the kids or the schools?

Then there's the people that tell kids they don't need to take band class, just go to practice after school...having NEVER taught a band class in their life...

These vanguard and magnet programs, along with ignorant principals and counselors, really did a number on band programs in Houston.
  • Support Yo Hood!!!
  • When u know you have the kids in the hood going to your school plus middle school...
  • 2. parents want a better hood. lol work an get that better hood to live in lol go to John Horn but live in the Da Cliff lol.
  • I think about that all the time. if it was Zoned out here...Kimbal, A.C. Smith an South Oakcliff would be the bigger better bands....thats not the case tho.
  • APPLAUSE ..................

Sometimes I ask if the middle school administrators are retarded. How can you shut down band programs to improve test scores? It has been done and has almost wiped out Sterling, Booker T. Washington, Worthing, Jones, Kashmere, Milby, Austin and countless others. The only thing that held these bands together was the directors just taking it and doing thebes thtye could with peanuts. Its starting to look like HISD is strengthening in the Band Department but its going to be a long process.

That TAKS stuff is outrageous unless your school can pass it. Luckily Austin recently started doing pretty good on TAKS but the mentality of Band is not Important still lingers around here. Every week, a parent gives a reason to pull their child out of band.

  • Majority to Minority transfers were created to kill the predominately black schools and it's working. Now kids are growing up with that white is right mentality. It's happening in the elementary, middle, high schools and colleges, especially for athletes. Glad i didn't get sucked into it, my mom asked me to go to Captain Shreve but i decided to go to my neighborhood school Woodlawn and don't regret a thing.
