Example:
GSU- Marching Style is very different from anyone, show segments are very different from everyone else, dancing & playing at the same time. Many in the conference don't even attempt it.
SU- Brassy, Powerful & distinct sound and drills.
JSU-Trombones, Drum Majors, distinct sound, percussion parts really give JSU a distinct sound.
FAMU-The concert sound and size of the band.

Simple as that....
back to the regularly scheduled topic =)
The drum features used to separate PV's shows from others as well...but nowadays, it seems as if other bands are taking stabs at doing halftime drumline features as well...and some are actually pretty good.
PV also knows how to put on a good dance routine too. Sometimes (well most of the time...lol) they can get a little rated-R...but they are still very entertaining.
naw bruh....BOX features still set yall apart....those 'other' bands don't have the same kinda flare BOX has on the field....
and yea, yall dance routines are R rated....but of course, thats the FAMn side of yall lol
We also incorporate Go-Go beats (Washington, DC regional music style) into just about every facet of our arrangements which gives a DC funk groove and feel to our sound. Listen to our Talkin Out the Side of Your Neck....its all Go-Go.
I also love our slow Circle Drill into the Heart and Arrow formation. Havent seen any other band do it like us and it gets house every time.
Howard is also knows for "6th Quarters"......these would be the random street battles we have after every home game with other bands (Example: TxSU 2002 and Norfolk 2004) We battle section by section and we've been doing them since about the 1980's, maybe earlier.
- Red, white, and blue colored clarinets (I guess we still use them)
- We no longer used the small-slide trombones, but we were the only HBCU that had them
- Tubas grip their mouthpieces in a style that no other tuba section I've ever seen uses
- Whip turns to flash the cape on the field
- Marching style in general
If you're looking for something big, I'd say *with the exception of a couple of rough performances the last 2 years* musicianship. I don't think ANY band sounds better than us, and I stand by that. Our arrangements are totally different that what you'd hear from any other band, and the percussion enhances them, yet doesn't over do it. We also drill as well as almost anyone.
Oh, and of course, we own the 3rd and 4th quarters!!!
but in addition I would have to say marching style the wing.
the drum majors conducting style on and off the field
several small things that are 40 plus years of tradition ie the melt halftime fanfare marching in at a slow pace.
sound wise in the words of Mr. Harris it's like a black mans stereo turned all the way up with the bass(tubas) on blast. Also the arr stye passes the melody between baritones f horns and trumpets like the keys of a piano. when the baritones move above high a flat the f horns take over when the horns reach high concert f (c) the trumpets take over.
