For me i would incorporate Bass Trombones, Bb flugelhorns, Eb Alto/Tenor Peck Horns and Bb Mellos to add another texture and it will definitely add more power within the band. I know Valley used to have all these type horns back in the days and their sound was unmatched in the SWAC when they did it. It would be great if SWAC Bands could incorporate these different instruments back in the marching bands.

1)Mellophone players actually played on mellophone/fhorn mouthpiece..You'd be surprised by the difference. I know a few bands use this.

2)Like you said, throw some tenor horns in there.

I also think some other forms of precussion other than bass, tenor, symbol, and snare..

  • we swtiched our horn players to french horn mouthpieces back in the summer and their range and tone is fantastic now. and yeah but with horns like that, the program would need alot of money...NEVER even heard of a tenor horn!

and about percussion, look at old Aug videos, you can hear their bells MARCHING, i believe some bands still do that but In my opinion, every band should incorperate a pit section during football season. Brings such a different sound to the band as a whole. My younger cousin actually will be on cymbols and the enormous wooden bells we have during football season!...too bad im long gone!

  • Me and Book talked on Facebook earlier about cornets in marching bands. Man if bands implemented cornets back into the marching band and put them on 3rd and 4th parts, it would make the trumpet section so solid. Cornets have that dark, full sound and it would definitely help bands that have big low brass sections.
  • that bass bone idea is great. Schools already use bones with triggers, but its not the same as a bass bone. ive played both tenor "pea shooter" and bass trombone and the power that the bass has is crazy.
  • Yep it would have them chords so powerful and full.

What would you do to upgrade the SWAC Sound or the conference that you march for?

  • Maybe switch to bass trombones, and upgrade the sousaphones to chrome(would look better than gold).
  • If SU ever moved to chrome tubas their sound would be even bigger. Just come to think of it, it may be close to the same because SU tubas seems to like to play in the upper register so you wouldn't still feel the full effect.

  • Hell they aren't heavier than tubas and percussion so what's the fuss? lol. Conditioning will nip that in the bud.
