First off this post is not dedicated to put anybody on blast in particular, but if you are offended you may be guilty. NEWAY This has been on my mind to discuss, especially recently since I have heard a lot of students from various schools saying they all were planning to transfer to another school while others say they are just going to march for another school.
What happened to pride in your own program?
When I was in the 11th grade, my school Smiley only had 48 band members while our rivalry Forest Brook had 180. Instead of sitting back riding Forest Brook, we prepared because we knew what we were up against. Of course Forest Brook blew us to Kingdom Come but beleive me we blew on them from the time they entered that stadium til the time they left. Nobody in our band would ever think about transferring to a rival school because their band was larger or ever better etc. We even battled Willowridge once that year. They were around 275 so you can imagine what happened to our little 48. Still the fact is that we were hungry.
What happened to people being dedicated to their own? Instead of worrying about another program, take initiative and build your own. If its a big band you want to be in, stop looking at videos of big bands and go recruit so that that other big beasting band can have some competition. A director can only do so much to build a program. If he/she is too mean to you and you want a nicer director who will do whatever you want, then you arent about whats best for your program. Get yourself together musicality then go find people who want to grind just as hard. Instill the same pride into the freshmen without tearing them down.
Also if you go to one school and march for another, slavery should be reinstated just for you.
Now when you get to college, what are you going to do? If you look across that field and you see Southern, JSU or FAMU, are you going to sit back and admire them or are you going to get hyped up and take that fire to them? IF SU does manhandle your band, are you going to transfer from TXSU to SU because of it? (Just an example, not saying SU manhandles TXSU). I really am just trying to just say that people need to be proud of whatever band they are in, even if they arent a top contender YET. The key word is YET. That YET depends on the current members.
Ahhhhh... I feel so much better... feel free to comment.

That's okay...Toe stepping is not such a bad thing ALL the time!!! It's just the truth, and sometimes it's tough to swallow. But, a great man once said,
"All the adversity I've had in my life, all my troubles and obstacles, have strengthened me... You may not realize it when it happens, but a kick in the teeth may be the best thing in the world for you."

In the past month, Ive heard about 10 different students from various places wanting to go elsewhere to be in another band (not just my students who want to go elsewhere, but students from other schools who want to be in my band and students from other schoosl who want to go to other schools.) Its the dumbest thing I ever heard.

People should never settle for "fair".
Its one thing if the band is traditionally good, but going through a temporary slump. Its another thing if some bands just suck, have always sucked and always will suck. Theres no pride in sucking.
