Although I heard about this last summer, I just came across this article
Some Mississippi House members said Tuesday that Gov. Haley Barbour's more politically sensitive budget ideas might be dead on arrival -- including a proposal to merge eight universities into five. Here's The article
I Can't Agree with that...
You need to be a member of bandhead.org to add comments!
you know, nt even including the band factor, Alcorn has a wonderful history as a school, a proud history that they share with Southern and Grambling. And for them to consider closing both ASU and MSVU is definitely not for positive reasoning...
Down in good old Mississippi the governor is looking to save the state money and proposing brash and controversial budget cuts.
Governor Haley Barbour revealed a new plan Monday to merge eight universities into five and reduce the number of school districts. In particular he's proposing merging the states' three Historically Black Colleges into one.
If Governor Barbour's plan is elected, students at Alcorn State University and Mississippi Valley State University would join their rivals at Jackson State University.
According to the governor however, none of the schools would be closed. Instead the state would save money in administrative jobs and” eliminate duplication in academic offerings.”
In the understatement of the year Governor Barbour spoke out about his new plan saying,
“Nothing about this budget is going to be popular.”
Governor Haley Barbour
Uhhh ya think?
To be fair the man's plan is frugal. He proposes spending only $5.5 billion which is $715 million less than the state originally budgeted for the current year.
Students at the rival schools shouldn't fret just yet however. Members of the Mississippi house and senate often ignore the governor's plans. There is speculation however that lawmakers may go along with it because of the poor economy.
I'm sorry but if I were in school I'd be upset, imagine if they tried to merge Hampton and Norfolk State!
I don't care if both schools offer the same classes, I would never take classes at Norfolk! Gross!
Me and some more friend were talkn about that yesterday. I was just waiting on someone to post this! Its insane. He doesn't look at the fact that ASU and MVSU has a proud history, Alcorn being the oldest school in the state! He didn't go there. He's not black, he doesn't understand and have to go through what HBCU students have to go through. Yeh that's cool he's trying to save money but that's not the wat. What about the Alumni? Doesn't he understand that JSU and ASU has a Capitol City Classic coming up? This is one of the cities biggest games. And people rejoice, tailgate, and cheer on their school. Its been a tradition and its practically embedded in people's mind to goto the ASU vs JSU game.
He's gonna cause mayhem if he does that. Students are gonna debate, argue, and everything else. Students are gonna still rep their school is he merges this into one system. Its not right and its not fair. Even tho I plan to attend JSU its not something he considered everyone's else opinion on, seeing that its gonna effect everyone else EXCEPT HIM!!!
I never like to play the race card, but as a citizen of Mississippi, what else can you call it. He never once mentioned merging the white schools that by the way spend the most money. I agree that something must be done with our budget, but why does education have to be the first thing cut. It looks like an attack on the black schools. It wouldn't have looked so bad if he would have said we need to merge Mississippi University for Women with Mississippi State(which he did say) and Delta State(white school) with Valley. It sucks for Valley( I wouldn't have been for that either), but it wouldnt't have looked so bad because these four schools are in very close proximity. There just isn't any justification for his wanting to merge all the blacks schools except.........you figure it out. You wouldn't believe the crap coming out of some the white citizens' mouths. They're calling us racist saying we want segregation because we are trying to hold on to our HBCU's. I argue everyday on The Clarion Ledger forum trying to get these jack@$$es some common since. It is HBCU-Historically Black College and Universities. That means that historically they were all black schools. People of all races attend JSU, Alcorn, and Valley. These same people talking that crap are outraged because the new chancellor at Ole' Piss, I meant Ole' MIss made them stop chanting " The South Will Rise Again!" at the football games. Now that's a racist idealogy. Really!!!! Racism isn't gone people and your brothers and sisters here in MS know that all too well. It's just done in different ways. Let's pray that this doesn't take place. If he wants to cut something, he can start with his own salary. He has assistants, assistants with assistants, assistants to the assistants' assistants and so on and so on. People just getting paid for doing absolutely nothing! I do agree with him on the fact that we have too many school districts(152 school districts and only 82 counties). I said that because I believe in giving credit when it's due. I try my best to be fair. It shouldn't be a black/white thing or left/ right wing thing , but it appears to be that in 2009. (WTF) I could go on and on about this, but this is a band sight; I was just commenting on the topic. It's a touchy subject for us in MS and I couldn't help it. On that hand, CCC week. Go Boom!!
I have to add my two cents in about this being a race thing. In this case (the state of Mississippi) it may very well be a race thing, but there are PWI's that are looking to be merged in with other schools. I don't know a lot about the issue, but will continue to research it, because this will affect me.

Whats Going On Mississippi HBCU's?
Although I heard about this last summer, I just came across this article
Some Mississippi House members said Tuesday that Gov. Haley Barbour's more…
This is far deeper than tailgating, history, cheering , rejoicing, and the CCC my friend. Are you saying that saving money isn't more important than the things you named? Just asking. Just based off of what I know about the situation, if you don't save money, there won't be any games. Merging schools does not equal no tailgating and cheering.
I look at it like this. If this merge can make education better and provide others with the funds to stay in or go to school, then I'm for it. Yes some people will be on the losing side, but that is apart of life. Everyone can be but will not be saved in this issue and many others.
No one mentioned that they are talking about downsizing athletics. I'm for it, especially when the school spends more on the athletes than they bring in.
I don't know, it's like, we are focused on the wrong things. I understand the concerns but some of these concerns are the most unimportant things known to man. If you are going to voice something...nvm
This decision will have it's advantages and it's disadvantages. I just hope....for the best.

"Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour could be in for a fight next year over his proposal to merge that state’s three public historically black universities into one institution.
Barbour on Monday proposed merging Alcorn State University and Mississippi Valley State University into Jackson State University as part of his plan to deal with decreasing revenue and increasing government costs statewide. Each campus would continue to function, Barbour said in a prepared statement."
As a Resident of Greenville, Mississippi which is 45 minutes from Mississippi Valley, 3 hours from Alcorn State University & 2 hours from Jackson State University, No one wants to see the schools to be merged... Those graduates of University of Mississippi, Delta State University, Mississippi State University & University of Southern Mississippi could care less about the merger but no one has mentioned Delta State University yet & they also have a small school enrollment. A solution that Greenville Weston Student Government came up with was to close some of Community & Junior Colleges campus, some of the 2 year colleges have so many campuses. The should first try merging Community & Junior Colleges, that are minutes apart from each other...... There are
Coahoma Community College
East Mississippi Community College
Holmes Community College
Itawamba Community College
Mississippi Delta Community College
Northeast Mississippi Community College
Northwest Mississippi Community College
Copiah-Lincoln Community College
East Central Community College
Hinds Community College
Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College
Pearl River Community College
Southwest Mississippi Community College
Jones County Junior College
We have over 14, 2 years colleges, how about Barbour start with some of these first or how about the merge some of these small school districts together we have 152 school districts but 82 counties....
These Rural communities could have Consildated school disitricts some of them do not have over 500 students enrolled in there districts...
School districts with less than 2000 students school be consilidated
