Usually I try to be positive because I have love for music and always enjoy seeing progress in everyone's band program but I am really concerned about this generation of musicians, parents and directors. This is not an attack on any program in particular but some things need to be said.
Students whats up with the laziness and lack of dedication? This past Saturday's Rodeo Parade in Houston is the largest parade in the city and televised viewed by 4 million people on average yet EVERY BAND WAS MISSING PEOPLE. WTH? I know very few were sick but a lot of you stayed home just because of laziness while your fellow bandmates had the stress of overworking themselves to take up your slack. NOT COOL. I know you get tired of hearing about our generation but I remember marching Mardi Gras in New Orleans with a broken nose. I marched hours in pain but I did it because I was dedicated and I know a lot of people have other stories too. One of our bass drummers marched with diarhea and he was shitting and marching at the same time. (TRUE STORY- SMILEY HIGH SCHOOL in 94). Yet today some of you will skip a performance to sleep or the clea your room... TRIFLING...
Now the other concern is how some of you have the NERVE to march for another school's program because you dont like how your band is run. Number One you are children and you dont know shid about running a band, thats why there are grown professionals called Band DIrectors there to instruct you. Number Two its illegal. If UIL finds out about illegal participants, your entire school will be sanctioned for a two year period not just band but all athletics and UIL Academics can receive penalties. Number Three it causes confusion in band programs. You go to school with these people and you have the nerve to be a turncoat and go to another program. Whats next, is JSU going to have people in their band from Grambling and Southern? That shid is dumb but really its not you its your parents fault for not teaching you morals.
To add to that: what happens if an illegal student gets in trouble or is injured while participating in someone else's program? The results would be catastrophic. Every program with any knowledge of that behavior would immediately be either sanctioned or shut down. Some of you think that its fun to do but whats going on affects everybody.
So as a professional, certified by the State of Texas with 11 years experience, I am urging all of you students to get back to hard work and DEDICATION and stop cheating and making excuses before something happens. We band directors work too hard to build our programs to have interference and let our bands die because of Bullshid. And to the college students who march with high schools: grow up and get your shid together. If you want to march that dam bad, ask your band directors to enter your band into the parades. Not only would it be fun but a great recruitment tool. OR MAJOR IN MUSIC AND GET YOUR OWN BAND. To any director who allows students to enter and do what they want: no comment.
Sorry so long but I see a cause for concern. This forum was not to point fingers at anybody in particular but something needs to be said. This generation needs to learn respect, work ethic and dedication. I dont care if my kids hate another director, I will not allow them to disrespect them. and if director sees a SFA Student out of line, check em please....
OK.... Im through for now.

I FEEL THIS 110%.. AND I AGREE WITH IT FULLY. BUT WE ALL KNOW WERE SOME OF THESE KIDS MIDS ARE.....SO I FOR ONE THANK YOU FOR PUTTING IT OUT THERE (GOLDY), THAT THIS GENERATION NEEDS TO STEP UP TO THE PLATE AND GET ON TRACK.
BUT LIKE I SAID IN ANOTHER FOURM... THIS IS GOING TO GO RIGHT OVER THERE HEADS. EVEN THOUGHT YOU JUST PUT IT AS SIMPLE AND AS BLUNT AS POSSIBLE.
SO IM JUST GOING TO SIT BACK AND SEE IF ATLEAST SOME HIGH SCHOOL FOLKS ARE NOT GONNA MAKE DUMB AZZ EXCUSES... BUT HEY THERE ALWAYS IS ONE IN THE CROWD.....
*DANG THIS POPCORN IN GOOD*
I agree with all of that. It is a potential lawsuit waiting to happen. There might be some exceptions(home school, schools without a band program) but those should be approved by the people in power.
However, as much as I loved playing in the band, I don't think I could ever imagine myself marching with a broken nose or a stomach virus. That is some hardcore stuff there. LOL
I think it's a society issue, to be honest.
Kids just don't want to do anything anymore...they rather spend countless hours on Facebook and playing video games than to go out and do something else with their lives.
:-)
Well said, lady and gentlemen. Those bands that are truly handling business don't have to make excuses or cut corners.
Some kids and bands are seriously lacking in discipline, loyalty, and MORALITY (sense of right and wrong). And you see the result of it...
