A quick history lesson... THE REAL LESSON, not whats on the books at FBISD Admin building.
Its sad they even built that school in 02... Only reason it was built was to keep a black Clements or Hightower from forming. The board cited growth in the area, well its growing just as fast as the "other" areas but the board doesnt see fit for a new school there. The plan was to rezone but U know them ppl aint want negros going to their schools, unless theyre the select few needed to bounce the ball. And if the rezoning would have taken place black ppl would have made noise to goto Willowridge anyways. So to keep the peace the board builds this great new school and slaps a black mans name on it with promises of this, that and more so the cited "growth" would send their little ones to this great school... Well u see whats happening?
Because Willowridge and Marshall have had the lowest enrollment numbers and probably still do in FBISD ( exception of Wood). So there was NEVER a real reason to build Marshall in the first place except to lower the projected numbers at another school, that would be Willowridge. They both have around 1500 at each school, while you still have 5 or 6 majority white schools in FBISD with 2500+. One or two close to 3000... You dont see the board rushing to build a new school 2 blocks away from each other.
If things would have kept on Willowridge would have a good 2800+ students, the #1 athletics in FBISD, #1 band for sure ****recall the earlier Willowridge bands 4 a sec, talking 200+...just think about it folks***... And they (white ppl) knew that would happen. o well... So this is no fault of the band program, it was an intentional move to destroy something great. I mean the school opened in 2002, the band was beasting from then till 06ish. Just another slap in the face.
The full version (dating back to the mid 90's) is sadder. That's for another time...
As much as they've done to stifle Willowridge and now Marshall, they can't stop the population trends. It's killing certain people in FBISD that so many black people live in Hightower and Bush's attendance zones. Let a director with showband expereince get in those places, and someone's in trouble...
Marshall will be ok, I think. This is year one with the new band staff. Watch them next year and the year after.

You are right on point. When word started spreading around the alumni about Marshall being built, we knew then the handwriting was on the wall. Even back in my time (88-91), we all were attentive that we were the most "powerfull" school in FBISD. We used to joke that they aren't gonna let this last, so enjoy it while you can. Sad to see that it has all come to past. I'm especially worried what ill happen to The Ridge when Prof Thornton retires. God help us!

I had always thought that! Thanks for letting the truth be told! NO school In the Houston area had the numbers That Willowridge had in band. And they were fast becomming the new 'Wheatley or Yates'. I remember Band directors at corpstyle schools mad at the accomplishments during the 90's of the band, athletics, step teams, etc...
But WE need to stop giving into propaganda about how our schools are...I have heard too many people say stuff about Willowridge that obviously ain't true or overly exaggerated. This is true about most of the Black schools in the city. Marshall has only been open 7 years and every little thing that happened there (which by the way in my time would have never left the principals office) was thrown out into the media in some form or fashion. Like 'We know this a black school so we gonna make sure we have a satellite truck close by. Those kids at Willowridge are boring now'.
Yep, because Willowridge like a lot of black schools have been pumping out success with minimal resources. Its embarrasing to see that in some ppls eyes when their little ones have damn near everything and still are shyt. But my dad always said, black people were breed to succeed without anything. When we make it we make it, rarely failing once at the top. Its hard to knock a black mans confidence.
But the thing about Marshall is that they were'nt allowed to grow. The board just dumped a few million into the school and said here ya go, now keep it up. Now its easy for them to say... we gave U a chance.
And U know the board will "influence" the decision once Mr Thorton retires... Go get someone fresh out of college and a year later cry foul about UIL scores and then ask why the band isnt what it used to be.
