Who really is Jackson State's Band Director?

I'm beginning to think it's O'Neil Sanford, because he's everywhere! The Boom really haven't had a Dance routine this year and the halftime shows have been :sleepy:. You can tell Dowell Taylor is no longer there. It really looks like O'Neil Sanford has Roderick Little hands tied? :arguing:

  • I agree but I'm confused so they gave RL the the title of marching band director but he don't run the boom
  • I been wondering the same thing. lol.   I think... Dowell Taylor was suppose to stay until 2016, then retire & Roderick Little  was suppose to be the next director of bands I belive.   Mr. Taylor retired earlier than expected for some reason I believe, I did not ask him or anybody else why.  O'Neil Sanford accepted the position to be INTERIM director of bands for this yr.    The Sonic Boom has a very very strong alumni....so, I doubt Sanford will have that position permanently.  If Little don't get it, it will not be Sanford, it will most likely be another Boom alumni.    The way it was set up was...whomever was the new marching band director suppose to have full control over the Sonic Boom field marching band!!   So, if its not working out that way...maybe Dowell Taylor should not have requested to have that position made available.   If Dowell had stayed only thing he was gonna do was oversee the program & make sure the symphonic bands, concert bands & basically the music dept was good & everything on point...but Roderick Little would have CONTROL over the BOOM!!!!   Thats what Mr. Dowell Taylor told me personally!  So yes...Sanford should NOT have any say so for halftime...if so....they should get rid of the marching band positon!      Im sure we find out more by the end of the yr.   We will see what happens with Boom Alumni & Myers about this....if that is the case of Roderick Little not runnig the BOOM show....lol.

  • Little is marching band director. Sanford is Director of all bands so he has a say so in everything including all fieldshows as you can see. He likes a lot of his tunes to be played and some things done his way during fieldshows and since he's in charge it's his say so. That's why they seem MEACish on the field. Sanford is retiring after this year so Little or Hollinger will be promoted to DOB when Sanford leaves, more than likely Little but that's up to the Music Dept who they decide.
  • I figured that was the case Jigga.

  • I wish Sanford was gone already. He isn't good for our program and some alumni are fed up with him already. He most definitely would NEVER be our permanent Dob and thats a fact.
  • I think just an honest honest observation from someone who likes the boom is that I think with what Jigga stated about the new DOB will help in making field shows better for jsu but personally I think jsu would be better off sticking to 2013 size or maybe about 250/275 at the most. The 2013 jsu was one of the best years I've seen as a fan of my second favorite band.

  • It has nothing to do with the Boom having 300 members..if the budget permits you to have that many & the JSU president supports it....nothing wrong with a 300 piece band, you just have to know what to do with them & its hard work for that many folks...lol.   If the University gives you the resourses to support 300...so be it,  I would not stop it..as long as it remains QUALITY, you just cannot LOWER the standards!!!

  • Nothing wrong with the size,we just need to get ole man Sanfords ass out of there! He doesn't know the booms traditions. We need ALL former boomers on staff, especially director of bands. As large as Jsu enrollment is now,the boom is a big part of the recruitment for some,so nothing wrong with a 300+ band if you can afford to have one. To be honest,i havent seen any really great field shows from anyone this year, just being honest. In Littles 1st year,we feel like he's done an excellent job with that large band and they've sounded better each week. Its coming just hold on.
