  • Well I played a woodwind and I wasn't discriminated against, but I was on my stuff on my horn and with my section. My ENTIRE section was great. I switched to a brass instrument and did a little bit of discriminating lol but for good reasons. I love woodwinds only if they can play and take music serious. If they can't play, don't want to learn how to play, or don't take anything serious then they are a waste of space to me right along with a brass player that has those same qualities. So basically what I'm saying is I discriminate against sorry people. Also I discriminate against woodwinds who play out of the character of their horn.

I say people discriminate against woodwinds out of ignorance, ONLY IF THEY CAN PLAY. Other than that, I don't know.

I will say that I have heard some ridiculous things when it comes to woodwinds. For example, "they can't be heard across the field." But some people have preferences. Like myself. I would rather have an all brass band, something like DCI bands. Nothing against woodwinds, that's just me. But discrimination most of the time is just out of ignorance.
  • That "d" word again... What exactly is happening?
  • i agree

Why do brass players descriminate against woodwind players so much?
im a brass player but i was just wondering
  • Well, as a woodwind player, I believe that the discrimination in "traditional style" marching band is the obvious factor that woodwinds just don't project like brass does, especially in small numbers... My band director one told me it takes 3 clarinets to equal 1 trumpet... so if 6 clarinets are going against 5 trumpets, there at an obvious disadvantage, especially if the brass decides to fill up the horns and then some. I mean, woodwinds can that, but it just don't work the same, like we get warped tone, squeaking and cracking, bad harmonics... I could go on forever, on the different stereotypes I experience(until I prove them wrong... well some of them), but I'm not...
  • i dnt understand that either......
i play my clarinet......powerful nd strong just like any brass
  • It's mostly because you don't hear the woodwind instruments like you do brass. I mean, I don't see what the problem is. It won't sound the same (in a good band) if they're not there. It'll sound empty.
  • Idk why..

    But sometimes
    they be slacking on
    the feild because most
    band directors main concern
    is the brass intrusments....

    Which is stupid wrong,,
    If woodwind players play out
like they did in the 80's, 90's, etc.
the band wood have that warm feeling sound

I wish i was marching in the 80's,,
these days dudes think its gay to play flute,
clarinet, but they just dont know....
  • i play a brass instrament and nun of our barss players discriminate aganist woodwinds inless we jus all jokeing around
  • depends on where your at...and how the BD at the feeder school treats their woodwinds. plus with saxophones, depends on what horn, reed(type/size), and Mouthpiece...flutes/piccolos....hell i hear these in everyband!!! Pay Attention to a vid of Two Hearts by SU...i hear them flutes quite well. and Cnets...IMO it matters with the range the play in

Though it is annoying when in band battles, BDs would rather have brass in front and push woodiwnds behind the dline...IMO makes the band sound bad.. Hell i hate it when my BD tells my section(saxophones) to sit down so upper brass could be heard...aint my fault they so damn short!!!! lol plus i love it when people hear my section behind the whole brass line on the field lol, makes me feel good...though me n my section go near lightheaded projecting our parts!!

soooo never underestimate most woodwind players LOL
  • brass is da cream of da crop.
