Question; Are you a real musician when you hate on other bands styles or identities? I am a Grambling graduate and crab fall 1990. I grew up watching Grambling and went to a school that groomed us for that style, but I always watched other bands as well. I truly appreciate SU, PV, FAMU, J-State; which during my years were the top bands period. I call us the big 5. I remember my crab year at the 1990 Bayou Classic; the crabs from Gram and SU chilled and accepted each other as crab brothers. When and where has all the hating started? You can't hate on another band because they dance and never put their horns on the ground, just appreciate that they are doing something that most bands can't do or at least not willing to try. You also can't hate a band that put their horns on the ground get muddy, but also jam and will definitely rip a new one in you. Why do bands only care about 5th quarter rather than the entire show from the time you get off the bus and that first person see you. Is that not part of the show? Well it was when I was in the band in 1990's, the show start from the minute you put that uniform on and even when you are on the bus.Stop hating each other and appreciate that we are all in music and we are a family. We never get the funding to support our bands even in high schools, nor do we get the proper scholarships to help us go to college, but if our bands don't go to a classic they lose money. All the hating tells me that a lot of you guys are not being taught music appreciation and all that goes with it like: Discipline, leadership, respect, loyalty, honor, pride, dedication, togetherness and character. I feel some peeps have hate in their blood and they do it to impress their comrades to fit in! No back bone whatsoever! They have no good reason why they hate your band but they just do lol! I have always wondered why there is so much hate towards GSU's style and how we do things but have gotten the idea to look over non musicians! I feel the real musicians don't hate! Real musicians usually accept and appreciate different styles but it's the non musicians that criticize and constantly hate! They don't know any better because they are living by that monkey see, monkey do syndrome! I don't hate any band but i i hate some of the mindsets and the lack of humbleness that some peeps in other bands display, like their band has no flaws! I think a lot of the current band members listen to the wrong peeps also! I know most of our band at GSU band is cool with everyone until they start trying to degrade the program! Some peeps take competition to far! They can't separate the the competition at the game or BOTB's from the after the game/BOTB's when you're on your personal time! They are simply poor bandsmen if they can't battle then be cool! The make it more serious than it really is! Gang mentality at it's best!
I can understand why there is some hate towards GSU, because we got all the major trips and invitations from the first super bowl and still to this day. We paved the road for years, so others could follow. Now that is not to say the other bands did not do anything to contribute to black college bands, because that would be BS. You can't forget FAMU, SU, J-State, TSU Oean of Soul, Tenn State and later on PV. I remember when other bands did not travel unless they played GSU or their game was in-state and that is simply the truth about it. We never looked down on them because each band has a respectable program no matter what. We have done what no other band will ever do in comparision, but there are some bands that will kick our butts if we don't bring our A game and when they kicked it you must be honest and give them props. At the end of the day all bands should give the crowd what they are paying their money for; which is to see a good halftime from both bands and then they leave, so we need to stop hating. To be honest about it; it is too easy to get in these bands now. If you are pushed and still can't do what is required of your band's style then you should be sent packing. I remeber my crab year people would leave in the middle of the night because they could not handle the pressure and di not want others to see them. Our first day as a crab you were told this band is not made for everybody and it was the truth. The band directors are at fault because instead of pushing the kids, they make it esy so no one feelings get hurt. If you are out of shape /get in shape or quit. If you can't march or play, then quit but the band must go on and put on a show. Man people would get pulled the last day of practice when were going on trips. I remember going to practice/our last practice before going to New York my crab year 1990. No one really knew if you were going until you arrived at 4 in the morning and looked on the travel list. Everyone in the band had to show up dress out with black suits/black neck ties and if your name was not on the list you did not leave til the band got on the bus and you went back to your dorm.

I believe that there will always be great rivalries, yet their is no need to have an argument result in name calling or true belittling of a band program. I for one believe that all these bands are equally great in their own way.
I Mean, Just to be honest, and excuses me if im not "politically correct". But Since Middle school in Memphis Ten, I was Taught that this Is WAR,and I am A WARRIOR. Now I know that once the uniforms come off that everything changes and we are all regular people and all that good ish. But im a music major, and im gonna be A dam good band director 1 day, which means to a certain extent, music is my life, and this is the MOST competitive form. I know the BOOM aint perfect, hell I know the flaws u dont, trust, but the things we do well, WE ARE THE BEST AT, and we bust our ass to be able to claim that title. To get to the point, at any time when u have a convo with a person from another band, it doesnt have to be an argument, BUT, when you are good NOW A DAYS, the feild is very competitive, and u have to live with that bullseye on your forehead. Just the other day, I was talkin to 1 of SU's old french horn players, !st thing I told them that they were beastin and that I lOVED his section....SU NOW!!! And Im A SL in the boom. He kept it real and told me S.O.P. BEEN BEASTIN this year, and that was that.Now, when a Section Aint beastin, and they try to tell u what u doin wrong, they settin they self up for failure, and then wonder y You talk bad to and about them. A true warrior is always ready for battle, so if u hot in that water, it is what it is. WHAT YOU PUT OUT INTO THE UNIVERSE IS WHAT YOU GET BACK. but hay, what do I know.....

Yes, this is war...but a good warrior respects his enemy/opponent and does not underestimate his power. Appreciating and respecting the strenghths of your opponent allows you a greater insight into your strengths and shines a light on your inadequacies. It's all about the music !!!

As I get older, I now know why all the hating happens. As students at your perspective college, you become immune to how you think band is suppose to be. You are being taught one way 24-7 and if you don't play within that certain style that the band director has implemented then its wrong. SO, when we see other schools we automatically go into our "hating" mode, BUT, it is not necessarily hating so much as it is BRAINWASHED.
I'm sorry, but could not understand your slang or code writing. I just getting a little older, but I do understand the war aspect of the battle, just make sure the warrior mindset is not negative to the point that you over estimate your talents as a group and not totally respect the warrior maindset of the other man. I like the positive discussion we are having. Educate me on Beastin/ SOP I am old.

True, but my enemy would be a fool to think I UNDERESTIMATE ANYONE, You would be a complete IDIOT not to know what your opponent is good at, really, what kind of leader does that? SMH. I hype my section up for everybody, Vally to SU to FAMU to Stillman because nobody is just gonna lay down and die!!!! Everybody fights. But, the truth is, when you are already have the advantage your oponent AT MOST THINGS, and your Always bustin your ass 2 get better, even in the summer, even when you THINK your opponent IS NOT, then it seems that your opponent is underestimating you and how hungry YOU really are......But then agin, when your tryna be legendary, your on a whole nother plain of thinking than those who simply wanna be "good" or "great"......Cause only legends can survive the test of time
