Why is there Cut time???

I always wondered when I was a freshmen in high school why is this music written like this?? Certain composers like Henry Fillimore wrote a lot of his classics in cut time like high school cadets and rolling thunder. ( correct me if I'm wrong it's been awhile. Lol) but my thoughts was always that certain music was written in cut time because it saves paper because of the repeats 1st and 2nd endings and codas etc. If it was written in regular 4/4 or 2/4 or 3/8. It may take up lots of paper and space and time. I'm very curious to know u guys thoughts on this topic. I'm not a music major so my thoughts may be off. Inform me u guys.

  • Humm....neva really thought about the y?? I always thought that cut time was for faster pieces and it helps with counting and conducting?? Much less motion going on trying to conduct a fast 4/4 aka common time piece as opposed to 2/2 aka cut time. Helps if piece is slow or andante too! o_0
  • I thought that was somethin my bd made up when i was youmger,lol...
  • So that the conductor does not have to look like a retarded bird trying to flap its wings super fast. lol
