Will hazing ever go away? Should it go away?

Im in btween moving back to school and getn sum rest in between the holidays so Im not doing much with my Friday night. But just got a call frm peeps letn me know that  they r at a hazing session as we speak witnessing unspeakable physical abuse to the ha-zees. Had I known the address of where they were at, I wudve called the police by now.

But with the way things are shapening up, im starting to wonder if seeing beyond hazing right now is even releasitic. Will this shid eva go away? Should it go away? R we capable as a society of beings and organizations to move forward with our ways of life w/o hazing?

My answer is yes! The time is now. Physical hazing is barbaric and just PLAIN STUPID!!!!!!! It enforces the wrong ideas and garners violence. And for wat....pride in a band that will be made of all new people 2-3 years from whenever?!?? Just STEWPID!!!!!! Yeah i said it.

  • i think it should be done away with...it promotes the wrong idea about HBCU's & black organizations as a whole

  • Yeah, can we beat the stereotype that whenever you get a group of black people together, they will form a gang of thugs and hooligans...atleast at the educational and university level? smh Cmn Son!

  • Should it go away? Yes

Will it ever go away? It's looking grim. I mean after what happen to Robert Champion, you stil got hazing. It's starting to seem to me that death will only scare people (especially African Americans) if it happens in front of them, and even then it might not stop stupid behavior. I mean who's to say that FAMU's gonna stop the hazing (if they don't lose their accreditation). However, I also feel that it is the ha-zees' fault for letting it happen to them. Why do you allow yourselves to be beaten senselessly? Now I realize I may be missing details on why they "allow" themselves to be hazed. I don't know the situation, nor do I pretend to know; I'm just asking a simple question. I know one thing though: Someone try to haze me, I'm gonna haze back. I'm WILL be in college band, but I also refused to be beaten just for whatever. As I stated earlier, I don't know the ha-zees' situation, but I know my situation. I'm gonna FIGHT BACK!!!!

  • Man it's encouraging to here you pre-college folks taking a step in the right direction. I applaud u. Cause honestly, that is how this thing is going to end, by educating our youth long before band camps start and taking evasive action to make sure we provide an environment that fosters and supports the idea of anti hazing. We need leaders like you who are ready to say what you will and will not stand for... and to know that physical hazing is just plain SENSELESS! Best of luck to you and your college endeavors. Thanx for sharing.

  • I see you only mentioned physical hazing.. just a foot note here by me.

the Armed Forces haze using this technique but :) anyways.

I suppose it's "needed" for them right.. oh and I don't condone it for one

  • I say physical bcuz hazing n general is a really broad term in our field. Some mite consider pt hazing. So while I am against all forms of hazing, i am even more against physical hazing. Piece by piece, this thang has gota end!

N u care to elaborate on this whole armed forces bit?

  • I understand I'm just saying people normally have just said "hazing" in general lately especially on the news but there are ways people will still say "I was hazed" that aren't just physical and it will get annoying to hear about a freshman or newcomers getting angry and reporting because they are told to be quiet/don't speak and learn for their first year.

They can always claim to be physically hazed and a pending investigation will soon be forgotten in the public eye... the damage is done with the reporting without all the facts of the situation.

Dealing with Crab names is another issue some people don't see the learning/fun/anything that good that can come from so called "hazing" but physical is not something that should be tolerated.

I'm just saying there are movies and documentaries out there that show the abuse the armed forces have to go through just to complete boot camp and that's what they allow to be shown.

  • to answer the question.... no. because people include alot of activities under the umbrella of "HAZING"

  • It will have to!!!! We still have to see the FATE of FAMU Marching 100.  ALL BAND Directors need to get together have a conference call via SWAC, MEAC, etc and talk.  Then talk to their students.  Cause now the Federal Government will have spies and more watch different bands from now on.  The current and future band students need to watch their conduct in uniform and while wearing their band shirts, jackets and other paraphernalia.  People WILL be taking notes.

Example.....The 2012 Honda Battle of the Bands.  The Honda security team gives EVERY band a briefing after they practice on Thurs or Friday. I AM SURE THEY WILL TELL THEM.

Also....Marching Bands are suppose to be treated like under Military Discipline rules.  Which means if Drill Sergeant got in your face and wanted you to do push ups.  You can't Devin Myles cry home to Mommy and Daddy.

But wait.......Some of these kids want to cry Mental Hazing.......WOW

ALL of the SU CRAB Males used to have to shave their heads blade and facial hair gone......Not now..It is HAZING??

Yet in ALL of the Armed Forces we HAVE to!!!!!!!!!!  These new soft whiny batchy CRABS and snitches!!!

Basically the current system.....Over HALF of current, former and FUTURE band students would not make it....

Do you talk or move around in formation???  Answer is yes....I see it all the time.  You form up at the buses to march in.  Messing with your uniform, adjusting your hat and plume.  That is already to have been done BEFORE the drum major blows his whistle!!!!!!!!

Physicality...IS NEVER needed for a CRAB to CROSS the band.  To me, that side came from some of the band members that crossed a Fraternity and brought it back to the band side.

So if you still feel the need to SNEAK and hit on a CRAB.  You are going to jail and face criminal charges...ENUFF SAID!!!!!

  • I guess I should comment.

This year, I was hazed mentally and physically.   I always told myself I wouldn't let myself be hit for any organization, but in the end I fell into peer pressure.  I admit it.

I have no problem with being mentally hazed.  Before this year, I couldn't really handle people yelling at me, being in my face and talking shit.. but Now I can.

The physical part, it was more in trials.  One prep, didn't hurt, alright I'll let it slide.  Then it kept going. Okay, they not hitting me hard, no biggie. It was more of a gradual acceptance thing as it kept going.

With all the incidents that happened, my section had a talk with our whole section, past and present.  Freshmen through alumni.  We talked about eliminating hazing within our section.  We (freshmen) made a promise to her to never get beat to do anything.

Sure, it may not sound nothing you y'all, but it meant more to us, and we planned to keep it.  Sometimes you lose sight of what's important, but being beat for something, is never that serious.  We lose sight of that in the midst of want to be accepted or wanting to do something or be some figure, whether is band, section, greek or whatever.

But, I was never hit to be in the 100, so it's whatever.  But if we want it to change,  it has to be a consentual effort between past, present AND new members.
