Zero/5th Quarter Challenge... Maybe.

Here in the SWAC we are all big fans of the highly anticipated Zero and 5th quarter battles... If you've noticed, you always see bands typically play the same songs against a different opponent,Why do bands choose to stick to the same 5th Quarter songs despite the change in opponent?Does anyone agree that 5th Quaters would probably be even better if each band uses a different set of songs?

  • Sounds interesting and it would actually showcase how deep a bands book really is... But I actually like to see some songs recycled so I guess I'm on the fence with this one...
  • Most bands save certain songs to showcase specific musical qualities: i.e. power, muscianship, technicality, etc.... But there are some bands that just don't have a book. But I'll be political this time and not mention whom they are.
  • if 5th Quarters could really lengthen in time, then they should switch it up as best they can 2 avoid becoming predictable. whats the point of having a book if a band repeats the same songs every 5th quarter? everybody knows there are some songs that shouldnt be used in a 5th and vice versa. every band also got they 5th Quarter stingers, but the Director shouldnt be limited 2 using these songs in EVERY 5TH if their book is really that deep. Instead using Ballad A this week, we use Ballad B. generally speaking, what shows off a band's book is actually using the WHOLE book, but thats easier said than done. Anybody can hide behind "their book" if they use da same 5th tunes every game.
  • DAMN!!!! what are these swac folks doing, taking every fun they can from HBCU bands. Im starting to hate these rules and possible upcomming rules !!!!

Be careful on this one. SWAC may ban Zero Quarter or place a limit on those too. As far as ur thoughts, it would be nice, but I just see it as too time consuming switching it up for another opponent. And wat would u base selection on?

  • you should expect any song to be played in a pre or post battle. band should play there power house song in the pre game, and technical music in the 5th
  • As long as the band is sounding good on the tunes and the execution is on point should it matter that they have certain songs for the 5th quarter and pre game battles? NO it shouldn't!
  • every swac school is guilty of playing the same songs over and over in the 5th

every time a 5th is loaded on the net i hear the same songs every time.

there may be a few games that a few schools switch up or play something different in the 5th but when its a 5th qtr that is highly anticipated by the fans then they play those same songs.
the ONLY time the 5th qtrs may SEEM different is when they are EXTENDED. and thats only b/c the band gets to play MORE songs.
jsu vs tnsu (that 5th qtr usually go on for over an hour) they play everything they know against each other
then jsu turn around and battle swac schools and the 5th usually last about 6 songs at best.
another example: last season su vs uapb. they battled for a while. played all types of songs... but when su was up against a bama state or alcorn they played those top 5 hits. and the 5th qtr was over with and the bands head to the bus.
  • I think bands should switch up and play different songs in the 5th....i mean if the their book is as deep as they claim it to be why not showcase it...Now there are times when i and others wanna hear a tune played the previous week....But i say change it up a lil bit and showcase your book.....As the season goes on from week to week 5th quarters tend to become predictable....

I definitely agree on the "time consuming" issue. Depending on the arranger(s) of the program, it would be a strain.

Yeah that makes sense... I can willingly say that its easier said than done, because some of these SWAC Arrangers really use flex their "brain muscles" on most tunes.
