Chris, as an SCSU alum, I must say that you seem well versed in the 101's history. However, a band's tradition is built by the vision of it's director. Sure, the 101's tradition that you spoke so eloquently about came from Mr. Ronald J. Sarjeant who was director of bands at SC State for almost 30yrs. So under his direction and instruction, the 101 did build a tradition based on what he taught them. But again, tradition starts with the director because it is his vision that builds tradition. So when Mr. Sarjeant departed, his philosophy and his teaching style departed as well. In came Mr. Ellis from Morris Brown with his philosohy and teaching style. When he came to SCSU, he had the right to employ his vision (his philosophy and his teaching style) using his arrangements with his new band. Morris Brown had the look they had because of he made it that way. Likewise, the Marching 101 has their look because of him he has it that way. So folks who like to harp on this notion that the 101 copied or look like MOB and/or SU, I say to you that NO BAND DIRECTS ITSELF. The band does as instructed by the band director. The style, philosophy, tradition comes via the director's vision and the band members are the stewards of that vision. The 101 is still and will always be the 101, they just happen to be the 101 with new directors.
The 101 sounds good to bad they look like Morris Brown . Tradition. the real 101 never doubled marched they had a standerd style ,that belong to them. The Dms never marched that way look at them in the early 90s and late 80s,and they never carried a mace. The band has grown but I bet they have not grown in heart.I tell it like it is.I hate that I know to many bruhs from the old school and I know that they don't like it. and with 300 people why do you'll sound like 150.My father worked at SC STATE. and he is one of the original 101. I grew up around that band.and it pains me to see them . The 101 is not called the 101 because they had 101 members. They call them that because they are 1 better then FAMU. Learn your history. change is good but tradition is forever.AEA .And my father was the woodwind professor and SCSTATE.I KNOW MY STUFF.
Mr. Knighten is a Legend no doubt in the arrangement category. But being a director of bands is MUCH MORE than that. Knighten is a little TOO cutt throat to be anyone's director of bands lol. Doc made the right the decision with Mr J.
lol@delly...I miss knighten at su..greggs should have left HIM the band and not jackson even though jackson is doin a great job on the fieldshows. I can tell the difference in the su band since knighten has been gone..so i hope SCSU gets the most out of Knighten a tru legend.
