DJ DRUMMERBOY---------------actually St Aug had plans to add ANOTHER 8th grade and 7th graders the year that KATRINA devastated NOLA.................
THEY HAD HIRED ADDITIONAL TEACHERS AND HAD A FEW OF THE SCHOOLS LEGENDARY OLDTIMERS ON BOARD AS ADMINISTRATION !
they has already prepared the school bldg 4 blocks away which housed EPIPHANY ELEMENTARY SCHOOL(also ran by the Josephite priests)..by now the 6th grade wouldve been added too.
IN THIS CASE KATRINA ACTUALLY SET THE PLANS BACK 5 YEARS !!!
TODAY the reasons are twofold..
first they are continuing with the plans made 6-7 years ago.second reason is since the number of kids coming in from feeder schools has decreased, the only way to remain in the highest classification is to began their own feeder system.
that will help in the long term not necessarily immediately though since the LHSAA(the state sports governance) counts student population 10th grade and above with a special formula for 9th graders when doing CLASSIFICATION........
ST AUG has always been in the highest class and does not want to play lower.
AUG tuition is higher than most of the other Catholic schools in NOLA and sadly but true:;like HBCUs the alumni donations lag in comparison to "others".
AUG is not able to give the financial aid they did in the 1960s-1980s and in the last 10-15 years have been losing alot of quality students and student athletes because of that.
THE 2005/2006 'KATRINA" BAND WAS BY INSTRUMENTS THE LARGEST BAND IN SCHOOL HISTORY,WITH 60 + TRUMPETS ALONE !!!
REMEMBER IN 2004/2005 THEY MARCHED 48+ TRUMPETS !
these 6th,7th and 8th graders will bode well for the music program and marching band especially !
once the quality, experience level and numbers get back;they should be able to compete again as the "BEST BAND IN THE LAND" !!
truthfully with the smaller number of schools, kids n NOLA plus the number of quality musicians, band directors and music "TEACHERS"(i use music teachers lightly) ALL THE MUSIC PROGRAMS AND MARCHING BANDS N NOLA SHOULD BE COMPETITIVE,WELL ROUNDED AND SOLID !!
they all should be equally competitive in the stands and on the field.
its been forever since ALL the bands have had new instruments, new uniforms, experienced band directors AND SCHOOL SUPPORT AT THE SAME TIME !!!!
NOW ITS UP TO THE BAND TEACHERS TO "TEACH" AND THE KIDS TO"LEARN" !!
Man...this song brings back so many memories. Even though the cam sound quality wasn't the best, I can still tell you guys have a great sound. Keep up the good work Big Purple.
