It isn't hard to compare MEAC to SWAC bands. FAMU is FAMU...the rest of the MEAC is NOT like FAMU. Don't believe the hype. A 5th with NSU or a halftime is NOT the same. That conference vs conference thing isn't common sense. Plus, it gets worse when other MEAC'ers ride FAMU's coattails as if their bands are doing something. They have bottom feeders too. Both conferences are about evenly matched.
I'm all for the SWAC but i just thank its hard to compare MEAC to the SWAC bands its unfair to them two different styles. SWAC bands be at war trying to knock ur head clean of ur shoulders, and as for as MEAC bands go the do their thing in their on way they just not as aggressive as the SWAC.
SU did come with the selections for the 5th. That has never been our complete focus. But I noticed they didnt really play much during the game. Wait till the 5th with fresh lips ready to blow. I agree we should have brought more to the table in terms of song selection. That was on all of our minds, but we put more pride on the field rather to be called a stand band. Props to SU band, trumpets disappointed me. FAMU, next years 5th will come with a few changes for the better.
Good jobs to both bands. But on another note, why are black people at this game spending money with the state that just executed Troy Davis earlier this week. Did we forget this quickly? We need to wake up.
Overall...great to both bands. It seems SU's w over FAMU is intensity. I'd give FAMU a slight edge in tone....and the song they played after Su played Been So Long. FAMU did put the music out back at SU(challenging things to play) but SU pushed their musicianship a little further. JAzz brings things out that classical doesn't. Classical music expresses more within the fundamentals of what it entails...not necessarily exploration, etc. (I know someone knows what I'm talking about)
FAMu's Getaway after SU's Make Me Smile was good...muddy though, compared to what SU played. Getaway is a song that you should OVER articulate....because EWF's musicians actually SWING what they play. If you play it as a marching band, you sound like you're rushing when you're not. Funk Factory has GOT to have the best concept of pocket out of most drumlines. I'm not speaking on "skill" but most drumlines I'm hearing FAMU included just don't listen to any actual song. Sounds great when they play...has ZERO to do with....man...nevermind...(cuz I'm gonna get accused of riding)
