his was my sophomore year at St. Aug. It was the best year of the four years I was there. With 48 trumpets (I was 10th seat first trumpet) 16 to 20 trombones, only six baritones, and 10 to 12 tubas this without a doubt was our year.
Now to the battle. This battle is more legendary than any other battle I can think of simply because of the fact that a high school band had the ball sack to go against SU. When we were getting ready to play, everybody looked at each other and we knew this was our chance to take the lure of "Da Aug" to the next level. Nobody said anything. We all had the look in our eyes of "This is St. Aug and this is how we do it!"
The first song we played was "2001". Man I wish we had that on tape. We got their attention! Trust me. Their heads were looking at the purple like "That's a highschool?!?!?!" We followed with "Wild Goose Chase". After "Wild Goose Chase" we were gonna play "I Got the Power" but SU played "Lies". We followed with our version of "Lies". And you guys know the rest
BTW, tape three is the end of the battle. There are some songs missing like "Lies". SU played it first and the we followed right after with our version.
To be honest, we didn't even play our power songs. "Wild Goose Chase", "Bob Marley", "Can't Walk in the Park", Lies, and "In the Stone" were strong. But ask anyone from 91' and they will tell you that "Take Your Time (Mantronix)", "I Got the Power", and my favorite "Midnight Train to Georgia" were far stronger. We begged Ray to let us play them but he did not.
If you do not believe me type in St. Aug / Take your time and watch the video.
This is what makes St Aug legendary! TAPEMASTER you did that! I don't know how you do it but thank you for doin' it! And mlmkwm you were right about the whole battle! They even had announcers acknowledging the "friendly" battle. TAPEMASTER & mlmkwm, my hat goes off to both of you.
