For a little while now, I have been very interested in OLD SCHOOL HBCUBands...(esp GSU JSU and Alcorn)....and i was just watching some clipsand its AMAZING to me how much these bands have changed. Not all in badways. Just change.....Check out these Clips down below i posted....GSUvs JSU 1996 Post Game...

(ITS IN THE FIRST REPLY!!)

Now that's only 2out of I think 4 parts...and, in these clips what i heard was just-AMAZING. The thing i RARELY ever see, is a band challenging each otherwith marches...Im still learning about earlier editions of certain HBCU bands, but where have these mindsets gone?! Where have these BANDSgone?!

Do you think it was ALL in the Direction those specificyears?...I would honestly rather listen to, and even march, in theearlier editions of most bands in the SWAC (mainly the 90-99 years)  Andit would REALLY be nice to see GSU back in action, like in the clip ishowed..

  • I think GSU will go back to that format of thinking, GSU knows you can't please everyone and have to get back to your roots and from how camp has been going i think the band will began to go back to the format in which they had, field and stand wise. From these clip posted you can tell that the directors did what they felt was best for the programs and not what everyone wanted them to do.There is nothing wrong in displaying your musicianship in the 5th with marches but only the unmusical and people who don't know any better will disagree.
  • Thats true...Its very interesting looking at history as such....Who was in Direction around that time?...and what year did the present Director take over things at GSU?

  • Lol yea...I Love throwback SWAC clips....I didnt know that Valley was the last band In the SWAC to convert over from Corps style?...Saw one clip of them doing Heal toe and doing Corps Drills....But around mid/late 90's.....they were REALLY nice...Nice size band also.....and BTW im feelin that clip of 97 GSU lol...nice
  • Maurice Johnson was over the band from 94-97, had a heart attack then Doc Pannell took over and his still there, he's retiring, next spring 2012.

  • Valley was a beast, they had that DCI kind of sound, i saw a tape when they play Grambling in Shreveport one year, they had to be 300 plus with a big sound. It would be nice if they went back to their roots, the SWAC had a lot of variety in the day now it seems the main focus is who's trying to be the loudest.

  • And that's why I love Valley to this day.
  • yep....and the thing some of these current bandheads dont understand is- being the MOST POWERFUL- doesn't mean a THING!...because in the end, 9x outta 10, HONESTLY the majority of the bands in the swac sound like frog shxt...If bands these days would just focus on tone, accuracy, and stop all that overblowing and blasting- everything else would truly take care of itself......but the majority of those 'Musicians" dont know any better......Its a difference between projecting and blasting/overblowing

And yea, the Swac seemed to be pretty diverse conference..i would have loved to march back in those days lol
  • Valley of today is nothing like they used to be, it seems the only tradition they kept was the fight song and alma mater. GSU might not be where it was in the past but i know one thing we still kept tradition. So how can you love something you weren't accustomed to?

  • Because I wasn't always a Valley Head. Besides, I'm still in high school. But when my BD started telling me about Valley in his day and I started doing research, I fell in love. No matter how much they change from how they used to be, I will have some love for them.
